Read On for short fictional backstory...

Once upon a time and back in the day,

around 2650AD, the UNSN Scout Class

Vessel 'I Blame Your Mother, The' was

routinely carrying out a long range

survey of a region of the Milky Way

Galaxy known as The Dogs Dinner - a

dense, chaotic area of nebulas left over

from a intense burst of star formation and

nova events around 600 million years ago.

 

It recieved telemetry during this survey of

a very unusual nature and changed course
to investigate.

 

What it found stunned the Ships human crew

and caused the ship Mind to do the human

equivalent of putting away its phone, donning

a pair of reading glasses and leaning forward.

 

 

In an otherwise completely normal star

system was a unique and almost unheard

of phenomenon. A Planet and its moon,

riven by highly regular energy storms of a

suspiciously patterned nature, and connected

by a gigantic fluxtube of plasma. No life signs

or technology was detectable in the system

itself or any nearby.

 

Yet the unique relationship and classes of

energy in the binary pair were both highly

stable and spoke of an intelligent cause -

although whom was responsible remains

a complete mystery.

 

Therefore, the star system and its unusual

couple became a source of great interest to

all of the UNC for a whole host of reasons

ranging from the Sciences all the way through

to the Military, although not before the planet and
moon had been named Farpoint and Pinpoint by

the crew of the scout. What followed was the

decision to build a base to study, observe the

sector and generally further the human/

posthuman and AI presence in the area.

 

Within months, The 'Just Read The Instructions',

a FusionForgeTM Manufactory Vessel arrived in

the system and began construction of a wheel

station. The latest CarbonCarbon Hyperweave

structural material and the hyperdiamond great

windows of the station were extruded using a

closely guarded method and before too long

Farpoint had orbiting it, although at a safer

distance than Pinpoint orbits, a new satellite

- FarPoint Station.

 

 

The new Station became a magnet for tourists,

scientists and all manner of colourful characters

from the Military all the way down to ships that

go unregistered and have no markings except

for weapon burns on their hull plating.

Farpoint Station declared itself independent

from UNC government control 37 years later,

and went into esoteric weaponry and vehicles

manufacture as a way of earning revenue. Some

say these new products drew on research carried

out in the system over the previous years, and

this explains why the UNC military went away

without protesting the move to independence

by aminnow like FarPoint.

 

Others say in quieter tones that the new

Management are in fact a interstellar pirate clan

named the Black Tar Pirates, and the UNC

officials left quietly because of certain 'footage'

recorded on Deck5 by clan stealth drones. The

Management remain tight lipped about this

however.
 
It declared itself neutral territory to secure

trade and traffic, and onboard a new

Laissez-faire culture was born. Established

government offices and allied companies

decamped back to the UNC, leaving vacant

lots in the HubDecks available to the more...

uninhibited and 'free thinking' businesses

and individuals.

 

The FarPoint Research Institute and renowned

Physicist Professor Boffinstein stayed on and

expanded its ring floor campus to both sides of the

ring sea with an influx of cash from the new

Management.

 

And so Farpoint Stations' story continues.
